Tide Pods

Tide Pods1999

Tide Pods interacts kinetically with the changing tides. At low water it floats in its opened form, the pods floating horizontally on the water. As the tide rises the buoyant pods are drawn upwards and out of the water so perfecting a budlike form at high tide.

Tide Pods has a 18ft (550cm) diameter when open. The pods are made from plywood using a stitch and glue technique, a method often used to make canoes. The stern ends are carved from oak and are hinged with bronze to the central form.

Tide Pods was made during a residency at the Lyme Regis International School of Boatbuilding in Dorset, England.
