Feather

Feather 2002

Feather is 10ft in length. The main body is carved from Iroko and laminated Oak has been used to continue the form that supports the white fibreglass and ash wing.

This work as the title suggests was inspired by the qualities found in a downy duck feather: small, curled and lightweight resting on the dark silky surface of deep water.

"I was impressed by the subtlety, the simplicity of something seemingly fragile, small and delicate, playing precariously with water and wind.

When making feather achieving the right balance was crutial; so the white wing hovers, balancing in a low and gentle curve over the surface of the water.

I love the movement and ever changing appearence of this piece. In still water mirroring reflections happen, making complete the symmetrical ideas that I had initially explored in drawings.

In light wind the Feather circles itself, dipping and lifting, making curves, and so drawing circles in the water."
