Tusk

Tusk 2002

Tusk is a work made for the land or shore, protruding from the earth or sand it stands 15ft (460cm) tall. It is made from a single piece of Western Red Cedar, carved after being steambent into its curved form.

"When making work for water I have thought of anchors and keels, the ballast, the part that is beneath the water's surface; the above and beneath are integral. With the land I think of roots, that hold deep beneath. I see the surface of the sand as I see the surface of the water, the horizontal aspect as a canvas for shadows to cast upon".
